Abstract
The purpose of this study is to highlight the appropriate teaching methods that can be
used by music educators in secondary education to approach students regarding the
refugee issue. Specifically, this thesis presents the process of organizing rehearsals to
achieve a music-theatrical performance on the refugee situation, with students from an
island-based music school. Consequently, literature review is conducted on the social
issue of refugees, on musical theater in secondary education, and on interdisciplinarity.
Additionally, the informal, collaborative, and experiential forms of music learning are
used and analyzed. This research demonstrates that through music theater, the issue of
refugees, xenophobia, and racism can be addressed. Through the performance, students
and the audience emotionally connect with the journey of refugees through their personal
stories. The music-theatrical performance becomes an interesting educational tool for
informing and sensitizing students and the audience regarding the refugee issue in
contemporary society. In conclusion, the approaches described in this work can be used
for any sensitization of social content, not just the refugee issue.
