Abstract
One of the most critical contemporary issues is the relationship between humans and nature in the backdrop of the climate crisis. Integral part of the transition towards a sustainable future is the (re)calibration of ecological and environmental collective consciousness, where education has a significant role. This research was an effort towards critical transformation of the perceptions of Primary students about ecology and environment, through musical education and the potential of music to have a role in a holistic critical educational model.
The qualitative research took place in three Primary Schools of Athens, for classes D’, E’ and F’. It was structured around the ability of music to provide inspiration and provoke discussion and exchange of ideas, as well as a tool to understand, doubt and expand personal beliefs. For this purpose, a series of educational Actions were designed and executed, and the research material included the following: Active listening of selected pieces and songs, open collective discussion about lyrics and themes, acoustics and sounds of the environment, questionnaires, lyrics construction and song creation, construction of a collective environmental- music library and utilization of other art-based and expression methods, such as drawing, collage and more.
Observations in the classrooms were made through diary notes and recordings. Analysis and interpretation of the results further established the significance and vast potential of musical education to raise questions, expand awareness and transform perceptions and beliefs in a critical way, as well as the children’s raising interest towards the topics of ecology and environment. Since environmental education is bound to be more important in the years to come, critical education should target to identify all necessary tools and utilize all potential from school curriculum and educative actions to cultivate a new culture and relationship with nature.
