Abstract
The subject of the present dissertation is to present an aspect of the relationship animation can have with poetry. For this to be achieved, a short animation film was created, as well as an essay to contextualise it. The first poem from the poetry book “Idionimo” (1980) Katerina Gogou, was used as the narration of the film. The technique used is charcoal animation. As for the creative process followed, it bears little resemblance of that of the animation industry, and it is based on automatism. Research has been done on the work of Katerina Gogou and her social background. William Kentridge’s work was inspirational, as he is the pioneer of charcoal animation and an extensive research was done on his creative process and his series of animated films called “Drawings in Projection”. The insight that was taken on these two creator’s work lead to a better understanding of the poem used and to the following of new dynamic creative steps up to the final result. The film works as an experiment in combining poetry with animation and suggests a narrative model in which the poem interacts with the moving image and altogether creates a new meaning.
