Abstract
The teaching of traditional music in formal education, such as Music Schools, has undergone changes in the way it is taught. Teachers who teach traditional music are face various challenges, such as the lack of experience of the students' tradition, the difficulty of the polyrhythm of traditional music, the teaching of stylistic features and, also, the and the need to organize the teaching of the instrument. Additionally, in the case of the accordion, the teaching of traditional music is even more complicated, since it is a modern instrument, with multiple identities, that did not previously exist in the musical tradition of Greece, but was later included in traditional orchestras. This thesis investigates the way of teaching traditional accordion music in the Music Schools of Greece, through the experience of seven accordion teachers. Qualitative research was carried out, through semi-structured interviews and the researcher's reflective diary. The collected data were analyzed through thematic analysis. The results of the research highlighted aspects concerning the ways in which traditional accordion music is taught, the challenges accordion teachers face, as well as ways to improve the learning process.
