Abstract
The translation of specialized texts assists in the dissemination of scientific advances by surpassing the limits that are set by language barriers and spatial constraints. This bachelor’s thesis focuses on the translation of an excerpt from the review article of E. F. Balcom, A. Nath and C. Power headed “Acute and chronic neurological disorders in COVID-19: potential mechanisms of disease”, which bears on the issue of the current COVID-19 pandemic. The translation models we utilise during the translation process pertain to the functionalist approaches of translation and more specifically, to the Skopos theory of Hans J. Vermeer and the functionalist model of Christiane Nord. We refer to the importance of the research capacity of a translator as well as the value of the research and methodological tools that they have at their disposal such as the glossaries they create. By analysing specific examples, we attempt to list the basic problems that arise from the translation of a specialized text while laying emphasis on terminology and the significance of finding the semantic equivalent of each term in the target language. Lastly, we conclude that translation may be used as a tool for filling terminological gaps in the thematic fields of minor languages, hoping that our translation contributed towards achieving this goal by presenting the translations of terms on the subjects of Neurology and COVID-19 in Greek.
