Abstract
This thesis focuses on the translation of Chapters 5 and 6 of the book "EEZ - Exclusive Economic Zone", written by Theodoros Karyotis and published in 2019. It is a scientific analysis on the EEZ. Greek is the source language and French is the target language. Chapter 5 refers to Europe's EEZ and some of the actions taken by the European Union to create EEZs for all its member states, which influenced the Greek effort to delimit its EEZ. More specifically, firstly, some decisions of the then European Economical Community (EEC) are mentioned, such as the extension of the fishing zones of its Member States and its final decision not to create an EEZ in the Mediterranean due to a request by Turkey. Then, reference is made to the Law of the Sea Convention and to what the Final Act of the Convention stipulates regarding the competences of the Member States that have ratified it. The maritime areas of EU Member States are also mentioned, as well as a 2013 EU study on Blue Growth that shows the huge benefits of declaring and delimiting EEZs in the Mediterranean. Chapter 6 refers to the events that have unfolded in the political arena in recent years and have halted the Greek state's efforts to delimitate an EEZ with its neighboring countries. In particular, the analysis focuses on the delimitation attempts with Cyprus, Egypt, Libya, Italy and Albania. Finally, the translation is followed by a commentary on the translation problems encountered during the translation process and the strategies followed for their solution.
