Abstract
The main purpose of this dissertation is to highlight the advantages of using alternative teaching methods, such as organizing CTF competitions, alongside the traditional methods of teaching Information Systems Security, and to cite the reasons why the participants greatly benefit by taking part in them.
Furthermore, this work presents and analyzes the most popular platforms to host a CTF competition. The advantages and disadvantages of each platform are presented, and then a comparative study and evaluation of the platforms is carried out. The aim of the comparative assessment is to draw safe conclusions about the appropriateness of their introduction in the educational methodology and in the teaching of Information Systems Security courses in the academic field and therefore, in the Ionian University.
Finally, the ultimate aim of the dissertation is to emphasize the importance of organizing CTF competitions within the framework of courses related to the field of Information Systems Security, using the appropriate organizing platform per case, according to the teaching needs. The selected platform can be used to organize competitions for laboratory lessons or for independent academic competitions in order not only to introduce new students in the field of security, stimulating their interest in this field, but also to improve the skills of the students interested in a career in this field, thus making them more competitive in the labor market.
