Abstract
The goal of this essay is to show and analyze the most decisive historical and theoretical schemes that lead to one of the most significant events of the 20th century: the Russian Revolution of 1917. This event resulted in the founding of the first socialist state after the country had been previously ruled by the Romanov dynasty. The current study consists of three parts. Firstly, the historical background of Marxism and its spread in Western Europe and Russia will be discussed, but also the political situation in the Tsardom of Russia in the 19th century. The second part will attempt to answer a key question asked following the revolution: how come that a socialist revolution succeeded in a country that was yet in between the Feudal and the Capitalist state? A development that isn’t exactly consistent with Marx’s theoretical foresight. This attempt will be based on the theoretical work of V.I.Lenin. For the third part, the Soviet administration that came to power during and after the revolution will be analyzed. The purpose for this is to highlight the early transition from the Marxist-Leninism ideology to the political acts spawning from that. Also the various ways in which this transition and its subsequent events were expressed by the Bolsheviks will be discussed. Finally, the essay will come to an end with the conclusions that were made based on the critic that Rosa Luxemburg made about the Russian Revolution.
