Abstract
The phenomenon of forest fires undoubtedly affects the natural environment and humans, causing incalculable consequences on a social, economic, and cultural level. Mediterranean countries, including Greece, are more prone to forest fires especially during the summer months (June to September). The anarchic construction that prevails, the lack of a land registry, the negligence of people and the inaction of the State have led to the increase of the consequences instead of decrement. The existing institutional framework is more related to extinguishing fires than to preventing them, so panic prevails at the start of a fire without specific instructions. Therefore, this paper may be the cornerstone for citizens since its purpose is to emphasize the importance of prevention against forest fires and of course their confrontation in combination with the cooperation of citizens and the State. The questionnaire that exists in chapter 5 illustrates the general picture that citizens have regarding the behavior of the State towards this catastrophic phenomenon, while the conclusions give the importance of forest fires and the destructive role they have.
