Abstract
This paper aims to examine the ways Greek countryside has been approached and portrayed in the domestic documentary, focusing in particular on the depiction of landscapes, morals and customs. After an introduction, where general definitions will be given for the documentary as a film genre and its relationship with reality, the dissertation will focus on the history of the Greek documentary regarding the subject of the countryside. Starting with the work of the pioneering Maniaki brothers, more contemporary creators with work that falls into this category will be studied, such as Takis Kannelopoulos. Afterwards, the role of the Hellenic Radio and Television (Ελληνική Ραδιοφωνία και Τηλεόραση – Ε.Ρ.Τ) in the popularization of the documentary genre in Greece will be mentioned, as well as the role of various major Greek documentary film festivals. Subsequently, a study of the archive of the Greek streaming platform Cinobo – a platform specialized in independent and arthouse cinema – will be attempted as well as a study of the archive of the Greek platform ERTFLIX, with the aim of finding Greek documentary films dealing with the subjects of Greek countryside, its morals and customs. Finally, a section will focus to the procedures before, during and after the production of a short documentary film entitled “Theodorianna - Touring the paths of memory “ ( “Θεοδώριαννα- Περιδιάβαση στα μονοπάτια της μνήμη”ς), made as a supplementary part of this theoretical thesis, as a personal approach to the documentary subgenre that is being studied.
