Abstract
Trap music, through the lyrics and the images shown in the video clips, seems to promote content related to topics such as drugs, violence, crime, objectification of women and toxic masculinity. As a result, it raises concerns among parents, educators, psychologists and sociologists about behaviors that may be adopted by adolescents who listen to it. These concerns were the reason for an analysis of the lyrics of Greek trap music, as it is a genre particularly popular among teenagers in Greece. This thesis aims to investigate Greek trap songs, in terms of the content of the lyrics, the themes addressed and the images they promote both in the lyrics and in the video clips. For this reason, nine Greek trap songs were selected based on selection criteria and were analysed thematically. The research questions that are sought to be answered are in regards to the meanings that Greek trap songs address and promote to teenagers and the way that toxic masculinity, the objectification of women, violence and substance abuse are presented in these songs. From the thematic analysis, categories emerged concerning toxic masculinity and female objectification, substance use, violence, intimidation and weaponry, positive emotions, the need for exhibitionism, lawlessness and street life, narcissism and arrogance.
