Abstract
This is the thesis of the undergraduate student Christos Karolidis, of the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpretation of the Ionian University and concerns the translation and commentary of two political speeches by Frank Walter Steinmeier. The first speech is from 2016, when Steinmeier was Foreign Minister of the Federal Republic of Germany, and concerns the turbulence in the Near East, and the second speech is from 2020, during his term as President of the Federal Republic of Germany, and concerns the manifestations of hatred and violence against local politicians. Regarding the communicative context, the texts were translated from German into Greek and annotated based on Christiane Nord's functional approach. The texts were chosen because of the importance these issues carry in German society and for this reason it is important to focus on the way in which Frank Walter Steinmeier reacted and subsequently on the way in which Germany as a whole reacted. The aim is to understand why these two issues are linked and how they are ultimately connected and what they mean for Germany and German society as a whole. This is followed by the original texts, their translations and finally a commentary on the translations.
