Abstract
The purpose of this doctoral thesis is to present the method, form and manner in which an incident of World War II was captured shortly before mid-1941, such as the Battle of Crete, with responses and analyzes in both the press of National Socialist Germany and fascist Italy and the friend adjacent to the Axis Press of the occupied France and Greece as well as to the Press of Britain, New Zealand and Australia but also the neutral american press. The period between May 20 and the first days of June 1941, when the Battle is still in the focus of the newspapers, is being examined. Additionally are examined the archives of the Special Military Court of War Crimes about the criminal prosecution of Germans involved in war crimes in Greece, the personal diary of the Minister of Propaganda of Nazi Germany, Joseph Goebbels, the archives about Crete from Ministry of Defense, Cabinet Papers and Prime Minister’s Office Records from the National Archives of the United Kingdom, the Churchill Archive, the Italian diplomatic archives from the Italian Foreign Ministry and the archives of the German Foreign Ministry. Based on the content analysis, this dissertation will end on the overall role of the press during the Battle, highlighting propaganda tricks, while bringing to light testimonies and new material, highlighting the different approaches of the Battle in the Greek and international newspapers. The comparative interpretation of the press archive reveals the biased attitude of newspapers to informing and shaping public opinion on developments with unique common characteristics, addressing the Battle as a major international issue and their selective interest. The conquest of Crete is further promoted as a matter of pride between the two warring sides, and their positions are implied by the accumulation of positive or negative comments in the description of events. Finally, photographic material, maps and written testimonies of soldiers of the Battle of Crete are presented.
