Abstract
The change in the population composition of Greece with the entry of a large number of economic immigrants and refugees has led society, politics and especially education to “a new order of things”. Of course, cultural diversity is not just a phenomenon of the last thirty years, if one considers the presence of traditional minorities living in Greece, such as the Muslim minority of Western Thrace, the Muslims of Rhodes, the Jews, the Gypsies and others. Terms such as “national identity”, “otherness”, “linguistic and religious inhomogeneity”, “assimilation”, “ghettoization” come to the fore and are of particular concern to the field of education. Therefore, the issue that arises is connected to the nature of the components and the teaching of religious studies in the era of postmodernism. The school, the curricula and the teacher have a key role in this process, as through them the principles and goals of intercultural education can be transformed into practice. The aim is for students to become critical-minded and active citizens, who will be inspired by the principles of respect, understanding and acceptance of diversity. What is examined in the research context of the work is how the relations between Christian and Muslim students are developed and how the respective religions are interpreted by the students themselves in an intercultural educational environment. The present work will be useful to those interested in the dialogue about the place of religion in the school environment, the interaction and the shaping of the image of the non-religious student in the dominant group.
