Abstract
In this paper, I examine the relationship between Polytechno, a live event space and bar on the island of Corfu, and the Department of Music Studies at the Ionian University. The research aims to highlight the various aspects of the reciprocal relationship that has developed between Polytechno and the university community, facilitated by the venue's rich artistic activities. Students from the Department of Music Studies, among others, contribute to these activities with their music. Specifically, I will focus on how Polytechno serves as a space for free expression, allowing students engaged in musical performances to develop both as musicians and as independent artists. This paper is based on ethnographic fieldwork I conducted at Polytechno, where data was collected through participant observation, field notes, informal conversations, and interviews with regular attendees. Through this music ethnography, I elucidate the ways in which Polytechno provides students with opportunities to enhance their musical, artistic, and organizational skills. It also functions as a hub for musical cultivation and socialization, supporting a vibrant and evolving student music community.
