Abstract
The present master thesis, refers to natural and man-made disasters that have occurred in museums over the course of time. In addition, the methods applied to prevent and/or respond to disasters in order to mitigate the damage induced to the museum, are presented. Initially, the concept of a museum is defined and it’s role and history are given. Subsequently the definitions of natural and man-made disasters are specified, while several cases of museums that have undergone disasters induced by either natural or man-made causes, are mentioned.The existence of a disaster plan whose stages are namely the prevention, response and recovery is required in order to successfully deal with the aforementioned disasters.
