Abstract
Culture and art are two concepts inextricably linked, as each one is defined and derives content and meaning from the other. The fine arts as derivatives of art, and painting as one of them, are hosted as products of culture in art museums and galleries. One of them is the Municipal Art Gallery of Corfu which includes works of art created by Corfu artists, and reveals the culture of Corfu. The paintings and engravings of the gallery reveal the development of architecture, literature and painting in Corfu, that point of meeting of cultures and artists, and the interaction of the arts on the island. On the other hand, the paintings of ethography of the gallery represent the lives of the locals in the villages and the city of the island, displaying their values, traditions, habits and customs. The life and work of the creators of these paintings and engravings are always determinants factors in the interpretation of their works, and the understanding of the cultural history of Corfu.
