Abstract
Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SDH) are a type of subtitles that provide a written representation of the audio portion of a video. Their purpose is to make the audiovisual content accessible to people who are deaf or hard of hearing, as well as to people who are unable to understand the spoken language of the video. There are various techniques that can be used in SDH subtitling, including the use of captions, colours and the placement of subtitles at specific points on the screen. This study aimed to evaluate the quality of these three subtitling techniques by screening a short film clip, subtitled using each of the three techniques, to a sample of participants who watched the clips and completed a questionnaire. The results showed that the colour use technique received the highest score, followed by the subtitle placement technique and then the captions technique. These findings, however, are indicative as the results of the questionnaire did not show large variations between the three techniques and therefore it is believed that a similar survey of a larger audience could provide enough information to improve SDH subtitling practices, enhancing its effectiveness as a tool to make audiovisual content more accessible.
