Abstract
The subject matter of this dissertation is the reaction and attitude of our country's indigenous population toward immigrants who arrived here either as passers-by or as an intending to settle down in our country. More specifically, this dissertation aims to present the stereotypes that the Greek society has developed for groups of immigrants and to trace them through the cinematographic representation of immigration in selected films of the modern Greek cinema.
The dissertation consists of two parts and includes an appendix, too. The first part refers to the phenomenon of immigration through different time periods of the human history. It also presents the experience of immigration in our country from antiquity to this day. The change of situation in the last decades, the reaction of the local population to the presence of a large (by the same token) immigrant population in the country as well as the development of several stereotypes against this population is particularly stressed.
In the second part of the dissertation the main issue is the presentation of immigration in the modern Greek cinema. The profile of different groups of foreigners in the modern Greek cinema is studied through the analysis of features of selected films (fictional films or documentaries).
To conclude, the paper reaches its outcome with the presentation of observations and issues for further discussion, emerging from the analysis of the specific films.
