Abstract
The present paper aims to promote the democratic values and the development of critical thinking through interartistic projects for primary school students of the sixth grade from two distant regions of Greece. Initially, the value of democracy in education and the need for critically thinking students and citizens, are presented extensively. Major emphasis is put on the connection between the school community and the child’s everyday life and sociocultural context, since the core of education in the 21st century seems to be the creation of powerful experiences for students. Art is proposed as an important means to achieve this goal. Thus, the social benefits of music are developed by focusing on listening to music, use of improvisation and singing. Subsequently, emphasis is placed on combining the arts and producing an artistic outcome. In particular, artistic activities in the school environments in Attica and Crete are investigated through interviews and the results obtained from the teachers’ points of view are presented. Finally, the data from both the teaching and the production of a musical performance which was staged in each school, are also presented, while the results and the reflections which emerged from the implementation of the two interdisciplinary art projects, are listed.
