Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the enhancement of musical and socio-emotional skills of school-aged children living in institutional care, with the contribution of music lessons. It was approached as a case study which was conducted in a Greek orphanage in the Ionian Islands, and the sample consisted of six children seven to twelve years old. Twelve group community music meetings were held. The methods of data collection used were the researcher's diary, the informal discussions on individual and group level with the children as they arose according to their needs, audio recordings of the meetings and different worksheets. The children's musical skills were analyzed concerning the triptych of listening, performing and creating music. The socio-emotional skills were analyzed according to the five basic categories of the SEL program: a) Self-awareness, b) Self-management, c) Social awareness, d) Relationship skills ) and e) responsible decision-making. In the thematic analysis of the collected research data, the difficulties faced by these children were detected, while the beneficial effect of music lessons on the promotion of their social well-being in combination with their musical awakening were recorded.
