Abstract
This graduation thesis was composed for the Department of Informatics of the Ionian University. It is a literature review that aims to highlight the contribution of computer science to renewable energy sources. In more detail, a reference is made to the transition from conventional photovoltaic systems to modern systems, also known as electric / thermal PV/T systems. PV/T are photovoltaic systems in which thermal collectors are installed. These thermal collectors are consisting of a coolant tank. The thermal collector aims to cool the photovoltaic unit and, at the same time, utilize the heat that is produced. This thesis describes how by building mathematical models, which are applied in simulation programs, we are able to know the appropriate design features of these systems so that they perform better. In addition, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are also discussed, which are part of machine learning. ANNs are systems with multiple inputs and only one output and are mainly used to produce predictions. The results show that it is possible to construct a PV/T unit capable of making maximum use of the heat generated by incident solar radiation. Finally, it is concluded that the most efficient months are those when there is enough sunshine but without excessive heat increase. And this is because excessive sunshine increases the amount of incident solar radiation but at the same time heats up the photovoltaic unit to the point where its efficiency is decreased.
