Abstract
This paper investigates the transfer of the greek culture-specific items of Petros Markaris’ book The Late-Night News into its British and American English, German, Spanish and Italian translations. Culture-specific items are the features of a culture that differentiate it from another and their translation is one of the main challenges that translators have to face. Translation theorists have proposed different definitions, classifications and solutions for identifying, classifying and translating the culture-specific items. By proposing various translation strategies and techniques, they aim to facilitate the translation process, especially when there are differences and gaps between the cultures of the source text and the target text.
This paper examines the culture-specific items according to the classifications proposed by Aixelá, Newmark and Molina Martínez as well as the techniques used to translate them. It investigates the translation techniques used by the translators in each language in order to transfer the culture-specific items, that are appertained to the proper names, material culture, social, political and administrative structure, social culture, linguistic culture, cultural heritage and gestures and habits. The aim of the paper is to draw qualitative, quantitative and comparative conclusions about the translation techniques used.
