Abstract
The main objective of this Master's Thesis is to examine and analyze the political discourse constructed by members of the Obama administration, during the period 2009-2013, around targeted air strikes in various regions of the world, employing armed drones. More specifically, using Critical Discourse Analysis, it examines those dialectical techniques and rhetorical schemes used to justify and ultimately legitimize the use of this weapon system in the field of the counterterrorism policy. This research also addresses how, through political discourse, the identity of the 'other', the 'opponent', the 'enemy' is shrunk and essentially neutralized. It is concluded that this US political discourse is firmly and strongly rooted in the political-ideological construct of the so-called 'War on Terror', whose long duration and multifaceted effects demonstrate the depth of its impact on political affairs and its potential to provide a 'home' for new perceptions of global anti-terrorist policy.
