Abstract
"CROSSWORD" is an algorithmic multimedia digital poem. Specifically, it's a crossword puzzle where the grid of words changes over time. Audience participates by using electronic mobile devices (smartphones, tablets, laptops). It connects to a local WIFI network and visits piece's web page. There word definitions are shown. Audience submits words by selecting the corresponding definition. The piece evolves using an ecosystem metaphor. The ecosystem of "CROSSWORD" has energy. It's inhabitants are the words that are shown on the grid of words. Ecosystem's energy decreases with every correct word that the audience submits. Each word is characterized by the parameters: age, energy, state and arrangement (horizontal-vertical). State takes the values 0-1. In state 0, word's letters are changed by random alternating letters. In state 1, the word is shown. Words are born having state 0. They change state when a player submits the correct word to the corresponding definition. Energy increases with food. A word is feed by selecting it's definition. When age and energy are greater than a fixed value, the word reproduces. Child-word crosses parent-word. A word dies when it's energy becomes 0 or it's age is greater than a maximum value. In this case it disappears from the grid of words. "CROSSWORD" is a game with two opponents: the ecosystem and the audience. Game's goal is to defeat the ecosystem. This happens when it's energy becomes 0.
