Abstract
Autism is a developmental disorder with several peculiarities such as communication difficulties, isolation, social aversion and major weaknesses in communication. Archaeological sites, when properly designed for visitors with autism, can offer through their educational and recreational role a real help for these visitors. The same applies to museums where through museum education, the person with autism can interact with the museum exhibits during their sensory interaction with them. All archaeological sites need to be friendly to people with autism and meet their needs to the best possible extent. Here in Greece there are great shortcomings and weaknesses in museums and archaeological sites regarding the needs of children with autism. In this study, typical examples from museums abroad are described that have taken care of the optimal possible coverage of the needs of the person with autism. Thus, people with autism will not feel any special category or any discrimination, but will feel equality with all other visitors who are not on the autism spectrum. The stimuli that a person with autism receives from museums and archaeological sites play a very important role in their psychosocial and emotional development since through sensory perception they can make significant improvements at a personal, learning and social level. Autism is a neurotypical disorder where the person decodes the messages he receives from his environment in his own way and so the approach from the environment needs to be special in order to cover his emotional needs. Museum education and the contact of the person with autism with the archaeological sites is a special form of communication. After all, that is where its main value lies.
