Abstract
Music as a language but mainly as a system of non-linguistic signs is translated by intersemiotic processes during which, according to R. Jakobson and U. Eco, it is possible to transfer and interpret a message from a linguistic system of signs to a non- linguistic system of signs and vice versa. Therefore a literary work can be translated into a musical work, a musical work into a literary work and, during the setting poetry to music, which is understood as a multimodal text and as a special category of intersemiotic translation, original and translation can go together. The meaning of the musical sign is determined by parameters, selected according to the aesthetic perception of each composer. The sonic interpretation of the musical sign is the confirmation of its silent reading. When transferring messages from the non-linguistic system of musical signs to any system of signs, the translator faces the issue of polysemy and of search for translation equivalents. Polysemy is the result of the different aesthetic perceptions of each composer, which are intensified by the different social, political, historical coordinates of his wider artistic becoming. The search for translation equivalents is carried out according to ‘N. Luhmann equivalence’ in the field of Semiotic which enhances the ‘Jacobson equivalence in difference’, is defined as ‘functional potential equivalence in difference’ and is investigated as follows: 1. From the musical to the poetic system of signs with the example of G. Seferis - E. Satie. 2. From the poetic to the musical system of signs with the example of I. Zotos - C. P. Cavafy. 3. During the setting poetry to music, by comparing the musical renderings of the poems 'Candles' and 'To Call Up the Shades' by C. P. Cavafy which are selected due the temporal and numerical range of their settings to music by a total of 13 Greek composers for almost a century (1925-2018).
