Abstract
Adoption is a social institution that we find in all cultures from ancient times until today which varies as to the philosophy, principles and practice that reflects the social, cultural and economic changes of society.
The main objective of this work is to give an overview of the concept of adoption and its evolution in time through studies and data as well as its role in Greek society and especially to approach the development of the institution in Corfu outlining the demographic profile of the institution at this time.
In particular issues concerning the historical retrospective of adoption, the theoretical approach of the institution and the role it has played in Creek law since 1966 until to day. Also presented are the results obtained from the processing and analysis of the data of adoptions carried out in the Corfu and the country as well as the proposals for the modernization of the institution and safeguarding the interests of the unprotected child.
