Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the role played by the New Acropolis Museum in shaping the national narrative. The museum, right from its design, attracted national as well as global interest due to its local and ideological connection with the Acropolis and especially the Parthenon, the monument that functions like no other not only as a national landmark, but also as a symbol of western culture.
Even before the foundation of the Greek state, antiquity was considered the main pillar of Hellenism, but also the cornerstone of European civilization; for this reason, the Athenian Acropolis, which is the quintessence of classical values and ideals, formed the basis of the national identity, while through it, the Acropolis, Greeks reproduce or transform the ways in which they define themselves in the international political scene. Moreover, in addition to being an emblem of the national ideology, it is a looted monument that expresses the need for integration.
The New Acropolis Museum, as will be shown in this paper, has placed itself at the service of the national discourse, as through its exhibition it places particular emphasis on classical antiquity, serving the national myth of Greek uniqueness and contribution to world culture, while embodying the call for the completion of the monument in the context of an ethnic, cultural and political dispute. At the same time, the museum is a confirmation of the country's worthy association with its European destiny. In other words, the New Acropolis Museum is a creation of the national narrative, but also an excellent representative of it in the modern era.
