Abstract
The present dissertation entitled ''Modern Greek Translations of Sophocle's Antigone'' has as its object of study the translations into the modern Greek language on the tragedy of Sophocles.The work focuses on four translations (separated by time difference) of four different translators: Alexandros Rizou-Ragavi (1809-1892), Konstantinos Christomanos (1867-1911), Konstantinos Manos (1869-1913) and Ioannis Gryparis (1870-1942). Its purpose is to show that every translator understands the ancient text and at the same time how he translates it into modern Greek, how he translates specific passages and words so that the meaning of the text changes or not, how the social, political and linguistic events of his time affect its translation and finally, if there are similarities and differences between the translations. In addition to the analysis and comparison of translations, an analysis is made on the interpretive and lexical part in order to be able to better understand the changes made by translators in the modern Greek text. Specific episodes and stasima and respectively specific passages and verses from the work have been selected for the work, which after examination seemed to be the most important for analysis. Each chapter consists of the episode of the work where first there is an interpretive introduction for each passage or verse that we will deal with and then the translation. Our goal is to study each translation in relation to the original but also the translations between them, to see how the translator himself stands opposite the original and whether there is a relationship between what the ancient author wants to say and what the translator says, without judging their choices.
