Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the contribution of a music education training to enhance musical skills that could support the musical relationship between mothers and infants/toddlers. Specifically, five mothers participated in music sessions that were structured to practice their rhythmic and vocal skills through the use of chair drumming. This research was approached as a case study. At the same time, the five mothers participated in a "Music Education Program for Infants and Toddlers" on an island in the Ionian Islands region. A total of 10 weekly music sessions were held in a community setting. Research data were collected through individual semi-structured interviews of the mothers, the researcher's diary, weekly informal community discussions and a group discussion after the completion of the meetings. In addition, for a deeper understanding of the contribution of the music sessions, interview participation was sought from three mothers who attended the music education program with their toddlers but not the community music sessions. The mothers' musical skills were analyzed in terms of their rhythmic response and free use of voice. Thematic analysis yielded categories related to musical environments, mother-infant relationship, reinforcement of musical behaviors and skills, group singing, motivation, challenges, and shared musical skills, as well as emotional engagement and communicative musicality. Most mothers noted the positive contribution of music sessions to mother -infant dyadic coordination, rhythmic responsiveness and free musical expression in general.
