Abstract
The purpose of this thesis was the study of the prison system in the Ionian State - through the case of Corfu - and how this system evolved over the years, under the influence of British Protection and the new theories about imprisonment that prevailed in the 19th century. Our goal was to present the society inside the prisons of Corfu, the people who make it up (inmates and employees), the special interaction relationships that are formed, the living conditions and the everyday life. Key issues we dealt with were the type of detention system (community or individual), prison housing, prison supervision and management, internal regulations, daily schedule, work, food, clothing, education and religious indoctrination. We focused in particular on prisoner delinquency, exploring what was considered delinquency within prisons, what factors led to it and how the state dealt with it, through legislation, disciplinary punishments and the reward system. The work of prisoners and its evolution from punitive (forced works of the type of warehouse), to penitentiary (salaried work of a skilled craftsman) and its economic dimension (source of income for the state and for the prisoner), is another key topic of our study. Finally, we study the type of prison system that was implemented in the Ionian State, what model it was based on, what were its goals, what were the means to achieve them and whether they proved to be effective or not. Regarding the methodology we followed, we approached the issues mainly through texts (correspondence, petitions, applications, complaints) produced by the members of the prison society (Directors, employees, prisoners) and from legislative texts of the period. For each individual topic, the general trend of the time in the advanced countries of the West is presented as it emerges from the study of relevant literature, then the data obtained from the study of archival sources and finally our own questions and conclusions.
