Abstract
This thesis constitutes a pilot research which focuses on the way music educators with classical music education and without any previous experience in free musical improvisation, can experience and cogitate on their first encounter with this broad field. More specifically, the degree of engagement and interactivity of a small group of music educators (4 people) in Free Musical Improvisation (FMI), the ways of comprehending and understanding the phenomenon and the possible influence FMI may have on the development of their individual, musical and educational identity, are being studied. The final purpose of the study is the understanding and emerging of free musical improvisation as a means of forming conscious entities, multidimensional musical identities, fertile relationships and educational frameworks. The participants are present in 5 meetings in total, with a semi-structured interview, three group improvisations and a focus group. At the end of the exploratory meetings, individuals maintain their contact with the overall experience, through the completion of a relevant reflection form. Finally, individual semi-structured, telephone interviews are conducted in order to emerge subjective perceptions about the use of FMI as an educational tool. The findings of the survey recorded collectivity and voice interaction as key factors facilitating and deepening the engagement in FMI, through the diverse sensory and emotional feedback they offer, as well as the use of informal sound objects as an effective way of liberating from ordinary musical expression and creation. Active listening emerges as the basis for a meaningful musical dialogue, in spontaneous decision making and the continuous negotiation of new sound effects, revealing the beneficial effects of a conscious presence during the educational process.
