Abstract
This thesis combines theoretical analyses with practical applications in a case study, offering a comprehensive view of religious tourism in the Konitsa region and highlighting its future potential.
Initially, the theoretical Part A and the first chapter document the global religious phenomenon, which is a fundamental element of many cultures and societies. It analyzes how religion influences tourism globally and references pilgrimages, which remain significant for many believers today.
The second chapter examines sustainable tourism development at both national and international levels. It then explores special and alternative forms of tourism, emphasizing their necessity and development prospects in Greece. Special emphasis is placed on cultural tourism and religious tourism as a form of it, highlighting their importance to the cultural heritage of our country.
The concept of religious tourism and its distinction from the definition of pilgrimage tourism is addressed in the third chapter. The characteristics of religious tourism in Greece and its current and future prospects are presented.
The fourth chapter analyzes the region of Epirus, its cultural characteristics, tourist infrastructure, resources, and religious monuments. Through a SWOT analysis, the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats related to religious tourism in Epirus are evaluated.
Our scientific research in Part B focuses on examining a case study by proposing the creation of a religious tourism route in Epirus, specifically "In the footsteps of Saint Paisios". Thus, the fifth chapter refers to the life and work of Saint Paisios in Konitsa. The stops of this route are analyzed, and the influence of the TV series "Saint Paisios" on religious tourism is examined.
The essential research methodology with an emphasis on triangulation as a research method is presented in the sixth chapter of the thesis, while the seventh chapter examines the interview as a qualitative research method, including the collection, recording, and presentation of the interviews.
The eighth chapter focuses on the use of observation and interview as research tools and on the analysis and reliability of the interview content. The ninth chapter follows with the conclusions and results of the research as well as proposals for future directions for the development of religious tourism in Konitsa.
