Abstract
Much has been written about the villages of the Mesogeia region of Attica, and the group of people who inhabit them has been studied mainly in a cultural context. However, there is no study that investigates how they were shaped over the centuries by influences that changed their identity and caused the decline of the Arvanitic language. This paper will focus specifically on the town of Keratea and in particular to its vigorous women, in an effort to explore and understand the modern identity of Keratea at a time when the language is no longer in use. In other words, it delves into the disappearance of this language in Keratea, the village situated furthest from Athens in the Mesogeia region and explores how the examined population group - with a particular emphasis on women - influenced this loss. Through a historical report and the influences exerted on the Arvanites of Keratea by various external factors, will be made an attempt to understand how the identity of this city evolved in relation to the Arvanites language and culture. Grasping the complexities of the above factors can develop a comprehensive understanding of the environment within which women functioned as a mainstay. Therefore, we will be able to comprehend the unique position of women in Keratea and their approach to the language issue served the interests of their immediate family context, as well as their active role in the cultural reality of the town. Finally, it will be safe to extract data that provide insight into the population’s modern identity, the reasons for the decline of the language, its self-relegation by the speakers, while it is necessary to address the question as to whether the very basic element of a language is essential for establishing a distinct identity within a group.
