Abstract
Literature concerning Dimitris Glinos focuses mainly on his contribution to the movement of Educational Demoticism, while insufficient attention has been drawn to other aspects of his work during the Interwar period. Most historians highlight his early course as a promoter of westernization reforms in society, while the fundamental change in his later years towards communist ideology is not adequately and impartially documented or explained.
This dissertation aims to investigate and interpret the ideological and political course of Dimitris Glinos from social democracy and ex cathedra socialism in German universities, to Marxism and historical materialism, and from the Venizelist party to the Greek Communist Party. Historical research was mainly based on primary sources both published and unpublished, in the context of the historical, political, social, economic, and educational-pedagogical events of the Greek Interwar period. A significant portion of Glinos archives that includes pedagogical studies, philosophical treatises, manifestos, declarations, mail correspondence, and personal notes was thoroughly studied. Our research also includes sources from the archives of K. D. Sotiriou, A. Delmouzos, M. Triantaphyllides, the Greek Communist Party, and from newspapers and magazines of that era.
Our study identifies and explores in depth multiple internal and external political and social factors that may have shaped Glinos ideology through the turbulent years up to his enlistment to the Greek Communist Party in 1935-36. Other lesser known aspects of his work like his contribution to the Greek women’s movement, and his proposal for establishing the Latin alphabet are also underlined.
