Abstract
The maritime sector plays a vital role in the global economy and security, making research and development of advanced solutions for its optimization and tackling potential challenges essential. This work aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of ontology development standards and tools within the framework of maritime traffic systems. This literature review examines in depth six studies focusing on ontology-based maritime traffic systems, as far as the detection of abnormal and malicious behavior in the maritime sector is concerned. In addition, an additional bibliographical study was carried out to supplement and validate the findings. Through our analysis, we present a framework that emphasizes the main pillars during the development process and the necessary steps to create an effective maritime traffic anomaly detection ontology. This framework allows researchers and developers to understand the basic principles and methodologies in ontology, allowing for better-informed decisions when designing systems in the sector. The findings from the current review serve as a valuable source for future research and analysis in the field of ontology-based systems, but also contribute to the strengthening of abnormal activity and movements detection in the maritime sector, underlining the importance of studying this essential sector.
