Abstract
This study aims to explore the experiences and music performance anxiety (MPA) that orchestral and jazz musicians experience in their everyday life, as well as in performances. At the same time, it explores the ways in which the music teacher can contribute to the prevention and management of MPA at the various stages of education. The intensity of MPA exposure experienced by each musician is different, while the lack of positive reinforcement from the teacher and support from the family, the pressure, the mistakes and the competition seemed to significantly affect life and professional development. The qualitative research was carried out by a focus group of 8 students from the Ionian University, Department of Music Studies. The categories that emerged from the thematic analysis of the focus group’s transcript are: (a) «The multiple aspects of MPA», (b) «Appearance and development of MPA», (c) «Contexts & Challenging Conditions», (d) «Aims of MPA», (e) «Effects of MPA», (f) «Strategies for preventing and dealing with MPA» and (h) «Personal Interpretations from experiences». The present research has shown that MPA may affect memory, the body and the emotional state, while the positive or negative performance experiences, public criticism, practice patterns, the level of technical efficiency, the teacher and the family, can contribute to its development, prevention and/or treatment.
