Abstract
This thesis investigates the increasingly significant field of interactive musical performance, an area that has seen substantial growth due to advancements in sensor technology and a burgeoning interest in collaborations between music and technology. The study focuses on the relationship between the dancer and the interactive system in the creation of an artistic work, emphasizing the use of the MUGIC® sensor (Music User Gesture Interface Control) combined with electroacoustic music.
The primary objective of this project is to explore the interaction between human and machine in the arts, specifically examining how an interactive system can respond to the movements of the dancer in a manner that is comprehensible to the audience while maintaining a degree of autonomy. The research questions address the effective use of the sensor and musical programming to create a flexible and interactive system for dance performances and the ways in which the interactive system influences the creative process and decision-making of the dancer during the performance.
In practice, the MUGIC® sensor is embedded in a LED-integrated ball (pod poi) held by the dancer, transmitting wireless data to a computer running MAX MSP software. This data is used to create and manipulate electroacoustic music in real-time, based on the dancer's movements and gestures. Additionally, a free improvisation dance performance using the MUGIC® sensor is conducted and recorded for the presentation of the thesis.
