Abstract
The present dissertation sets out to underline the importance of Syllabus Design regarding the decisions that are specific to the specialized translation students’ training and assessment of competences in undergraduate degree programs. By bringing together i) the relevant theory and research in other scientific fields of educational study (i.e. language acquisition, teaching methodologies, educational assessment), ii) the dominant alternative approaches in contemporary translation teaching (i.e. competence-based instruction, skills-based instruction, task-based instruction), and iii) the careful interpretation of the findings derived by observational fieldwork on two courses in translating economic texts from English into Greek spanning over a whole academic semester, this dissertation attempts to adjust a Curriculum Design model originally proposed for language teaching purposes to the parameters of a teaching scheme that fits the novice specialized translation students’ needs and constitutes a teaching methodology which represents a combination of opposing trends in translation teaching (e.g. teacher-centered vs. student-centered teaching, theoretical vs. practical training, collaborative vs. individualized learning, process-oriented vs. product-oriented curricula/syllabi) and focuses on the skills and competences that must be developed by the students, the assessment of which must be based on specific tasks and criteria to ensure the objective judgment of their strengths and weaknesses as well as the timely provision of feedback. In essence, this dissertation marks up a theoretic practical framework for the implementation of a design for teaching translation of specialized/economic texts, thus signaling the passage to the field of the Applied Didactics of Translation.
