Abstract
There are many platforms - applications worldwide that have been created and are updated via crowdsourcing projects while their aim is to offer constant information about accessibility points around the natural environment. In the present thesis the phenomenon of lack of accessibility, at the center of Corfu and specifically at public places and spaces around Saroko Square, is analyzed. Public places are considered those that are addressed for the public, whether it's shops, squares, roads, walkways, pavemetns and bus stops.
With the participation of volunteers (first-year students of the Department of Informatics of the Ionian University) and the use of the WHEELMAP platform, several locations around Saroko were investigated and their accessibility for wheelchair users was assessed.
The conclusions from the use of WheelMap are that only 2 out of 45 POI’s (4.4%) rated as fully accessible. Notable and promising is the fact that 19 POIs (42.2%) were assessed as partially accessible. 24 points (53.3%) were marked as inaccessible.
A questionnaire was distributed and a statistical analysis of it was carried out. A very interesting conclusion is that the feeling of altruism is the most likely motivation for the young person in order to participate in similar actions, while on the other hand it is reflected that in our days money has either friends or enemies, 20 out of 45 participants, replied that they agree of being paid for participation and 20 that they disagree. Finally, we can say that internal incentives are more likely to trigger participation than external.
