Abstract
Τhe wide spread of internet and new information and communication technologies, resulted in changes both in the production and consumption of products and cultural goods. Internet users are able to actively participate in the production process, while companies harness the so called “crowd wisdom” through crowdsourcing. The applied collaborative practices encourage the development of a new culture, based on open access, sharing and collective participance. Here we study all the above to investigate their connection with the publishing industry.
Τhe present thesis aims to investigate the means and procedures that engage readers into publishing activities of commercial fiction. Reader participation in writing, selecting, publishing, and promoting literature content is studied considering crowdsourcing practices, applied by writers and publishers via specialized internet platforms. We are focusing on listing and studying these internet platforms that facilitate reader engagement both in Greece and abroad. Following Howe’s work classification for crowdsourcing practices, we attempt to classify the studied internet platforms into four general categories that are based on: a) crowdwisdom, b) crowdvoting, c) crowdcreation and d) crowdfunding. At the same time, we investigate advantages and disadvantages of publishing models based on reader participation, as well as the changes currently taking place in the traditional publishing industry. Finally, we present a short description of how each platform works and list publishing attempts by Greek writers that utilized crowd engagement.
