Abstract
The following project examines the connection between music and sign language. It is a topic that explores the 'conversation' between sound and gesture. Sign language is a visual form of communication that uses hand movements, facial expressions and body language to convey meaning, while music is an aural art form that evokes emotions through rhythm, melody and harmony. The aim of this research is to highlight the necessity of including the performance of songs in Greek sign language impairments in the products of the music industry, ensuring that people with hearing impairment can actively participate and appreciate the rich cultural heritage of the Greek song. Raising some questions about how feasible it is for the deaf community to perceive music and be moved by it, the results obtained from the relevant literature and the present application seem to be positive. Five videos of Greek songs were created, with the help of a deaf collaborator, which combine the melodies, lyrics and emotions of Greek songs with the expressive movements of sign language. The videos not only capture the essence of the music, but also provide a visual and inclusive experience for both deaf and hearing people. These results would not have been possible if the prominent deaf personalities who helped to explore the topic had not been studied at the beginning of the research: Glennie, Beethoven and Little Augusta have been highly inspirational for this project.
