Abstract
Cultural and creative industries are a recent development sector with a major economic and cultural contribution, since they play a vital part in the development and competitiveness of every city which invests in them. They are considered as a new developmental engine which has attracted the academic’s, politician’s and economist’s interest. They are a part of the formal strategy of the countries and constitute a successful example of development.
The consideration of culture as an industry with economic contribution is the result of not only theoretical conversation s and judgments but also of policies which have led the way to this direction. Understanding the current meaning of the term demands a historical flashback to this way and their individual dimensions of the issue have to be further examined leading to a more precise image.
This paper aims to investigate the theoretical conversations as well as the practical examples of cities, which have invested in the cultural and creative industries. Furthermore, there is a reference to the venture of some international organizations (UNCTAD, EE), which try to quantitatively depict the economic contribution of this sector. This reference to the cultural and creative industries of Greece bears the hope of a turning to a more successful development.
