Abstract
Today, more than ever before, gender as much as gender inclusivity and diversity are found at the forefront of public discourse as a result of the claims made by the LGBTIQ community. Content of this paper is the comparative examination of five language versions (English, French, German, Greek, Spanish) of the European Commission Communication “Union of Equality: LGBTIQ Equality Strategy 2020-2025” in the context of the unique drafting and translation regime within the EU, focusing on translation theory, sociolinguistics and terminology. The paper initially presents the institutional framework of the Strategy as an official document, the theories and translation strategies governing its genre. The main part of the paper focuses on specific observations in the two main areas of sociolinguistics and terminology. It includes, firstly, an analysis of the Strategy’s sociolect in order to determine whether its language is inclusive and whether it actually tries to reach or distance itself from the individuals and communities concerned. Secondly, the terminology of the Strategy is analysed so as to detect term convergences, divergences and patterns among the five language versions, to ascertain whether its terminology was successfully rendered from language to language. It is important to emphasise the positive path our society has taken with the adoption of the Strategy, but also the need to avoid unfounded and generalised approaches when claiming individual rights and visibility for every social subject irrespective of gender.
