Abstract
This study aims to examine the use and attitudes towards serious games among secondary education teachers in Greece. Initially, a comprehensive review of the existing literature was conducted on the wide spectrum of serious games mainly for the purpose of understanding their use in different application areas, the role of motivation in these types of games and the way they are designed to be successful. Subsequently, a survey was conducted via an online questionnaire in order to gather data on teachers’ use of serious games in the classroom and how their views on serious games are influenced by their experience or inexperience with them. Findings show that 44.8\% of the respondents have incorporated serious games into their teaching practices in classroom. The majority of the teachers expressed positive attitudes towards serious games, recognizing the importance of their use as a motivational, collaborative and instructional tool. The perceived educational benefits of serious games were also rated positively. To further analyse the data, a set of independent t-tests were conducted to compare the attitudes of teachers who have utilized serious games in the classroom and those who have not. The findings revealed statistically significant differences, with teachers experienced in using serious games showing more favorable attitudes compared to the inexperienced teachers. This study highlights the potential of serious games to be effective in secondary education and the critical influence of teachers’ experience in the acceptance of these methods.
