Abstract
This undergraduate dissertation, theoretically based on Immanuel Wallerstein’s world-systems analysis theory, discusses the shaping of the geopolitical position of Greece at the crossing from the 19th to the 20th century. The major point of focus is found in the period before the country’s entrance into the First World War. The disseration’s aim is to outline the nature of the inter-state system, which is founded upon the factor of relative material power. Special attention is given to the aspects of material power (military-economic) but also to one aspect of power which relates to the public opinion (Press manipulation). Moreover, attention is given to the matter of the political subjects’ (in both a personal and a social level) ability to perceive and act both rationally and irationally. The major research questions are related to the factors which delayed the Greek entrance into WWI, to those which enabled it as well as to the traits which signified its “peculiarity”. In addition to the secondary bibliography, the dissertation’s sources include previously unpublished primary source material, which consists of telegrams sent by Sir Francis Elliot, British Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipontiary, as well as other high-ranking British officials stationed in Greece during 1917, to the heads of the British Foreign Office. Furthermore, the sources include the republished and previously censored memoirs of Compton Mackenzie, head at that time of the British secret services in Greece. As an undergraduate dissertation, this paper contributes in supporting the relevant secondary bibliography as well as limitedly enhancing it.
