Abstract
The object of this research is the study of the transition from childhood to adulthood, while at the same time the significance of play in childhood and the connection of abandoning play with the path to maturity are highlighted. Furthermore, the relationship of the ritual with transitional events in human life is examined, while particular emphasis is placed on rites of passage in ancient Greece along with the symbolic importance of toys in them. The main goal is the creation of an audio-visual art installation based on the present bibliographic research. The final artwork narrates a contemporary rite of passage where the viewer is invited to explore and participate. This thesis explains the methodology followed for the bibliographic research as well as for the construction of the visual work, while also listing the research questions that guided the course of the work. The following theoretical framework is developed in six chapters, play, childhood, adulthood, transition, bringing toys to life through imagination and finally stereotypes in children's toys. In the first chapter of the theoretical framework we find some definitions of the game and the toy, while also a brief historical review of the game is presented and its importance in human life is analyzed. Then follows the second chapter with definitions of childhood and the stages of the child's development as he / she is led towards maturity. In the third chapter we find definitions of maturity, followed by information about the rites of passage, with more emphasis on the ancient Greek rites of passage to adulthood and the use of toys in them. The fourth chapter of the theoretical framework analyzes the period between stages, during which one has left a place or situation but has not yet entered or joined the next stage. In the fifth chapter, the process of bringing toys to life through imagination by children during the play is investigated, as well as the sense of dread that can be evoked in some people by the idea of animating an inanimate object. Finally, in the sixth chapter, reference is made to the gender stereotypes found in children's toys. After the theoretical framework, information about the artwork follows. The central idea and the perspective of the viewer are analyzed and information is given about the rules of proper operation and the technologies used for its construction. Finally, the conclusions obtained from the bibliographic research and the completion of the artistic project are mentioned.
