Abstract
The subject of this thesis is the translation of the short story "The Three Coins" by Iakovos Polylas, a prominent critic, politician, journalist, and writer. The story is set in two old villages in central Corfu and focuses on three generations of a family trying to recover a treasure guarded by a spirit. The narrative unfolds through the story of Antonios and Michael, who seek the treasure to solve their various problems.
Polylas highlights the intense relationship between the physical and spiritual worlds, as well as the social and moral values of the era, such as work, property, and faith. The story combines elements of fantasy and reality, emphasizing the human soul and the fate of its characters.
Antonios, one of the main characters, in his effort to find a husband for his daughter Frosyni, encounters Moro, a spirit guarding the treasure. Through his adventures, themes such as honor, family, and personal redemption are highlighted. Michael, the other main character, is modest and hardworking, always carrying a large knife, a silk handkerchief, and a talisman with incomprehensible writing, symbols of his noble origin and destiny, which he discovers through his quest for truth.
The work also includes comments on the social conditions and cultural contrasts of the time, offering a critical view of society and its traditions. Polylas uses the short story to explore deeper themes such as identity, heritage, and the impact of the past on the present and future of individuals.
