Abstract
In recent years, the effect of climate change on the planet has pushed the outbreak of forest fires that, due to wrong handling, expand and many times the result is the loss of life. It is customary after such disasters for the political leadership to make speeches addressed to the public which often overemphasize the concept of mourning, while later an attempt is made to assume (or deny) their responsibilities. In Greece, two such fires were a matter of wide discussion both by the general public and by the political leadership, one was in Mati (July 2018) and the second in Varybompi and Evia (August 2021). It is worth noting that in one case the responsibility was taken by one of the ruling parties, while in the second case the ruling party played the role of the opposition.
Taking the above into account, this paper aims to thoroughly examine the political discourse regarding responsibility and mourning in natural disasters. Specifically, the statements of the two prime ministers and respectively of the opposition in the above two cases as they were reported in the media will be examined. Considering the aforementioned factors, the present study aims to investigate the following research questions. First, when a statement was made, what was stated and who made it (government or opposition). Furthermore, what are the differences in political discourse when the ruling party takes on the role of the opposition and vice versa after an election. The study will therefore show how the concepts of mourning and taking responsibility are treated and whether action is taken to improve the situation through them.
